Building value from knowledge

Facilities management guidance introduced

Published 28th July 09

&The strategic role of facilities management in business performance

The strategic role of facilities management in business performance examines the need for facilities management strategy to support the business needs of an organisation.

This new guidance note, published in July 2009, has been developed for the Facilities Management Professional Group of RICS and is relevant to all RICS members and other property professionals who might be advising clients or employers as to how they might add value to their core business operation by the application of best practice facilities management processes.

It has been designed and written to support chartered facilities management surveyors in delivering value-driven services. Importantly, its purpose is also to outline the added value that they bring to clients, not only in terms of facilities and business management, but also in terms of other, far broader, property-related services to which they have immediate access.

The guidance note separates the facilities management cycle into five separate areas:

  • strategy;
  • sourcing;
  • operational;
  • review; and
  • continuous development and change management.

Ian Brodie, Chair of the Facilities Management Executive Group, commented on the publication of the guidance: 'This is a milestone in the development of facilities management standards by RICS. A major piece of work has been produced for chartered facilities management surveyors working in the strategic FM field.'

Ultimately this guidance will be incorporated into the 'White Book' (a full suite of facilities management guidance and information) once further practice material becomes available.
