Summary

All building, engineering, mining or other operations including changes of use in, on, over or under land and some demolition operations require permission under the Planning or Listed Building Acts. This section outlines the two aspects of town planning compliance: development control - the assessment and determination of individual applications for development and pursuance of enforcement action in the event that development proceeds without prior approval; and development plan - the planning for the future needs of a community through a development plan. It covers planning applications, enforcement, plan-making, and governmental control, and discusses environmental assessments, appeal proceedings, and challenging planning decisions.

This section is maintained by Alan Gunne-Jones of Open Planning Consultants Ltd.
